The spectacular coast of Maine has been a tourist destination as long as there have been tourists. In the 1800s, the wealthy, the bored, and the curious boarded sailing ships and rode the prevailing winds and currents to Bar Harbor and other port towns. The journey east was so much easier than the trip home that the expression "down east" came into fashion. Some of the area around Bar Harbor has been designated as Acadia National Park, which is intertwined with the many areas of private ownership, which provided the site for many of the images in this section. The best time of year for photography in Maine is the fall. The image at left gives a taste of the spectrum of colors of this beautiful part of the country. |
