Devil's Tower

Devil's Tower, Evening Pines

The tower stands out from any angle, catching the evening light like a beacon.

Composite Flower Bud

The orange fertile flowers of the Aster family grow in mathematically precise rows demonstrating the influence of Mandelbrot equations on the growth patterns of living beings. The single elongated white petals of the outer circle are attached to infertile flowers which are just used to attract pollinators.

Sand Lily

Sand lilies have flower parts in threes, like the rest of the family. The flower's inner portions are brightly colored to attract insects.

The Tower Above The Road

A winding road provides access to the back country areas of the national monument.

Cactus Blossom

The petals of the this yellow cactus blossom are thin enough to be translucent. In fall, the resulting fruit is the prickly pear, which is edible if care is taken to remove the thorns.

Despite the park service's protection, fire sometimes sweeps through the ponderosa pine forest that surrounds the tower, resulting in the dead trees at right. At evening, the last rays of the sun light the forest and the tower alike.
