In this age of digital recording, real drums often give way to drum machines. Being on the road much of the time has meant that I increasingly rely on this Alesis rhythm programmer, which has over 200 tunable drum sounds, touch-sensitive pads, and a great deal of recording flexability. It's not the same as playing real drums, of course, but the end result is close enough that I can barely tell the difference--except that the drum parts have none of the usual noise that goes along with live drum recording. Besides, recording actual drums in hotel rooms isn't popular with the other guests.
