But Rico stands his ground and lays claim to Lupe

Gato disagrees and warns Rico to leave

pulls a piece so Gato is unleashed
Soon Rico is deceased without
a soul there to grieve
Rico died not knowing Gato's heart was strong

Gato had watched out for this Lupe for so long
If Rico had a soul it's
now just wandering in the dark

Now Rico's in the ground, his grave
cannot be found
And everyone in town knows there's still some justice
Lupe's gone back home to spend some time alone
And maybe when
she's grown she can learn to trust us
Gato's gone now too, did all that he could do
He
never left a clue about where to find him
No matter where he's gone his
legend will live on
Maybe the day will dawn when Rico's death is behind
him
How could we let our Lupe fall so far so fast?

made Rico rich with all those questions never asked

"Canto Del Gato" means "song of the cat." While I was recording this song in Estes Park, Colorado, a bobcat, something I'd never seen in the area in many decades, began hanging around. Somehow his macho sharpness morphed into a dangerous but basically morally good character.
